Going home always feels quite surreal. It goes by in a whirlwind every time, except for short moments on silent afternoons when there is only the hum of the refrigerator, a kettle boiling in the kitchen, the trains clacking across the tracks in the distance, horns playing like organ chords as they travel past residential areas on a journey toward Canada. Snow falls lightly outside the window. The sun sets through the bare branches of trees beyond the balcony. It is bitter cold but full of warm welcomes and fond memories.
I’m back in London now, where the city noise is endless – the traffic, the pubs, the sirens, the crowds. It feels like Spring. There are flowers growing and buds on the trees. There is energy here and uplifted spirits from a hint of sun.
Here are a couple of links for the next few days:
- There’s some wonderful new street art pieces popping up around the world by artists like Snik in London; Eduardo Kobra in Brazil; Stinkfish in Miami; and MP5 in Italy.
- Have you ever written a letter to your younger self? These inmates have and the letters have been incorporated into a photography project called Reflect by Trent Bell.
- I am a sucker for clever advertising. DHL’s prank is brilliant.
- If I ever make it to Sydney, I’m having breakfast at the gorgeous Balmoral Boathouse Cafe!
- 5 places I’d like to stay: Edgar in Paris; Rosewood London hotel; D.O.M. Hotel in Rome; this townhouse in NYC’s West Village; and this loft in Barcelona.
- Photo projects that involve strangers almost always amaze me. Check out the talented, Montreal-based Benoit Paillé.
- Portraits by Brooklyn-based photographer Joey L and a video by filmmaker Cale Glendening explore the lives of Hindu ‘Sadhus’ living in Varanasi, India.
- 5 recipes to try: Apple and Olive Oil Cake with Maple Icing; Stuck-Pot Rice with Lentils and Yogurt; Greek Lemon Soup with Chicken and Orzo; Shakshuka; and Cheesy Pesto Pull-Apart Bread.
- It fascinates me to see where and how other people live. Check out this project photographing 75 Parisian women at home by Baudouin.
- And a video of music made entirely out of the sounds of a bicycle that composer Johnnyrandom hopes will inspire others to look at everyday objects with more curiosity and wonder:
